Fandango Recording

Professional recording

Fandango Recording provides professional recording of multi-track recording, voice-over, and overdubbing. The studio can properly accommodate a set of drums, provides only high-end recording equipment, a multi-cue monitoring system with personal mixers for each musician so they can adjust how loud they sound in their headphones, and offers various instruments if needed, like piano, guitars, and synths.

Tracking & simultaneous recording

We do multi-track recording up to 24 simultaneous tracks with resolutions up to 24 bit/192KHz. We can have everybody playing together, to try to get a great performance- which is the most important thing you must keep in mind when recording. This is a typical way of recording jazz, which is very interactive and where capturing the feel is very important.

Voice-Over and overdubbing

Recording vocal or each instrument separately is another approach; generally the recording will be done in stages, starting with the beds, recording only drums and bass (with all people playing together for a better performance). The groove must be nailed properly; punch-ins for drums are not desirable. Once the beds are all done, the other instruments and vocals are to be recorded. This approach is often used in rock, alternative, and pop genres.

No matter what your preferred approach is, all musicians will hear and see each other; each musician will have a small personal mixer so he can control his own mixing in the headphones the way he feels comfortable. As many projects involve voice-overs, Fandango Recording provides an exceptional array of vocal microphones and preamps and a comfortable vocal space, with controlled acoustics.

Many folks produce the instrumental tracks themselves, and then want to record the vocals, be it pop, hip hop, R&B, adult contemporary, or any other style.
Fandango Recording offers a plethora of high-end microphones, preamps, and compressors, to accommodate every type of voice. The microphones used are Neumann M49 tube mic, Neumann U87, Lawson L47 and L251 tube and FET, Shure SM7, Sanken CUX-100k, chains like the famous pre Martech MSS10 / Tube -Tech CL-1B for very dynamic voices, to the warm preamps like Focusrite Red & Pendulum Audio MDP-1 (tubes), from Neve 1073, Chandler or Tree Audio to the extremely clean Millenia or from the AEA TRP ribbon mics preamp to the API 512 preamps.

As far as getting the sound right, once you have your
instrument set up and ready for recording, the engineer will determine the best microphone position. While there are some general rules for capturing the sound, every instrument, voice, microphone, and preamp have their own characteristics and the engineer ensures he captures the sound the best possible way.
Always listen to what you have recorded; you don’t want to discover there are problems when the mixing is done and you have to come back for more recording. Not only more recording takes additional time, but the sound will also be slightly different. It is impossible to match the previous setup, as air pressure and humidity differ from the day of original recording. So, listen to everything at the end of the recording session. Sometimes people are tired, but this is an effort that always pays off!

Recording on location

Fandango Recording provides multi-track recording on location in the Costa Brava area, for classical music, choirs and jazz. Recording on location is the right way to approach your musical project when:

  • The sound of the room (hall, church) helps add character to the type of music being played, and is actually a major part of the final sound.
  • The objective is to capture the performance, the band’s ability to entertain, improvise and move the crowd. Recording a concert, a show in a club may not be as polished as a studio release; however I personally enjoy live recordings a lot because they demonstrate the band’s real appeal and strength.
  • Children safety is a concern. Recording on location in schools (like schools choirs, battle of the bands) makes it easier for schools to organize and provide for the safety of the students, which otherwise can be a major problem. I did some lovely recordings in schools recording their children choirs and orchestra. Afterwards, the schools were able to sell the CD, raise funds that we're used in the continuous children education.
